The Assessment Process – Step by Step

Step 1. Enquiry

If it seems that you meet the criteria for fostering we will arrange to meet with you in your own home to discuss your enquiry in more detail and answer any questions you have.

Step 2. Application Form

If you meet the criteria for fostering, FCI will formally invite you to apply.  All prospective applicants are encouraged to carefully reflect upon all the information provided before deciding whether or not they would like to proceed to a full assessment.

Once the application form is completed the formal assessment will begin.

You will be required to give consent for background checks and Garda vetting.

Step 3. The Fostering Assessment

You will be allocated a Fostering Social Worker who will work alongside you to evidence your suitability to foster.

You will be required to meet for a minimum of 8 assessment sessions and will be supported by your social worker to identify examples of situations you have handled well that evidence your skills and abilities.

You will be required to complete “The Foundation to Foster” training course. This will allow you to meet with other prospective carers, share experience and learn more about foster care.

As assessment report will be completed by the social worker and presented to the Foster Care Committee in your local area where a decision will be made as to your suitability to be approved as a foster carer.

Step 4. Approval

One approved your name will be added to a list of approved foster carers with Foster Care Ireland.
